ABOUT US

- NorthWest Orthopaedic Institute is a non-profit 501c3
medical research and education organization committed
to pursuing quality musculoskeletal research and education.
- We are committed to community-based research and education
related to musculoskeletal public health, health care
and quality of life issues.
- Our main goals are to produce research, translate it
to meet needs at the community level, and to provide evidence-based
public and professional musculoskeletal health education
that improves the quality of life of all members of our
community.
- Using a broad multidisciplinary skill-base, we integrate
efficient systems approaches with caring service while
seeking diversity and excellence.
- Our founder, Steven M. Teeny, MD, is a board-certified
orthopaedic surgeon with over 15 years experience in private
practice at Lakewood Orthopaedic Surgeons, P.S., Lakewood,
WA
- Our staff members have extensive experience in medical
and public health academic research, professional, health
care and community organizations, nursing and physical
therapy.
- The NorthWest Orthopaedic Institute staff are members
of numerous professional organizations and are partners
with many Northwest academic and government programs and
national, state and local professional organizations.
- The NWOI is located on the University of Washington,
Tacoma campus in the historic Tacoma Union Station district.
Our offices are one block from the Greater Tacoma Convention
and Trade Center and only 30 minutes from Seatac International
Airport.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
We are actively involved in working with many organizations
in the areas of:
- Consultation
- Collaborative, multidisciplinary research
- Survey research
- Research studies including orthopaedic devices, orthopaedic
and injury outcomes
- Program development and implementation
- Public education in the area of musculoskeletal health
- Total hip and knee replacement patient education and
research
- Bridging the community public health and health care
systems
- Providing academic opportunities for undergraduate
and graduate students and faculty
- Providing community volunteer opportunities
