Orthopaedics is one of the largest areas of health care and accounts for more than three million hospitalizations annually. Musculoskeletal conditions and injuries are responsible for 130.7 million visits to physician’s offices, hospitals and emergency departments every year.

The NorthWest Orthopaedic Institute is a non-profit [501(c)3] organization. We are committed to community-based public health research and education related to musculoskeletal issues. Using a broad skill-base, we integrate efficient systems approaches with caring service while seeking diversity and excellence.

The NWOI is located on the University of Washington, Tacoma campus in the historic Tacoma Union Station district. It is one block from the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center and only 30 minutes from Seatac International Airport.

Our mission is to facilitate and produce deliverable, reliable and accurate research-based information. In disseminating this information, we aim to improve the quality of life of all members of our community.

WHERE RESEARCH MEETS COMMUNITY

As a community-based organization, we seek to be approachable and undertake projects which have direct application to
making a tangible difference in the health of the public.
As a research institution with roots in both clinical and basic sciences, we conduct rigorous studies from design to data collection and analysis with quality assurance at each stage. Findings from these studies are shared both with health care professionals and with other members of our community. The NorthWest Orthopaedic Institute also provides information and education to the public regarding prevention of diseases and injuries, and available treatments.
